An essay is a single sentence
An essay is a single sentence, an idea I am entertaining now, but it wasn’t always the case, since I remember reading Proust not long ago and feeling exhausted at how long the sentences dragged for, but then I watched Adolescence, of which episode 3 might have become my all-time favourite, and while watching, I was reminded of Mr Robot’s episode “Runtime error”, which I also loved, the commonality being that they are entire episodes shot as single scenes, so I started to wonder if this is what my style is, so here’s my attempt at linking my thoughts in a neat fashion, where you’ll see no full stops, like The Book of Pleasures, which at times makes you feel like you’re sitting inside the protagonist’s brain, feeling every thought she goes through, and that is where I want my readers to sit, but to reach this point of understanding took me a while, as I read several similar ideas, where Brian McDonald in Invisible Ink says your story should just say one thing, what he calls the armature, and that everything you say should be an extension of that, or where the creators of South Park said every scene should be connected by a therefore or a but, and I believe they were trying to say the same thing, that any piece of writing is indeed a single sentence, therefore smaller essays like this one can be written in one go, barring the edits, which honestly gives me a sigh of relief, since I’ve always struggled with too many thoughts about the same things, and that has also become the reason I never finish my pieces.
